Sermon by Elder Mitch Fontaine

"Who is the Temple?"

Prayer of Preparation

Gracious God, we welcome you into our midst and invite you to make yourself known to us in the silence, in the symbols and in the words and melodies and actions of our worship. We lay aside all else but the desire to be in your presence, touched by your grace and fed by your Word. Enter this sacred time with us, we pray, that we might apprehend the Holy and more importantly, that the Holy might apprehend us.  Amen.

Call to Worship

What a joy it is to be together in this place! We find such encouragement from gathering as one body in the presence of our God. As you enter into worship, look around you. See your brothers and sisters; recognize their place in your life. Worship God together today. Let us celebrate God's beauty, majesty and power. Let us worship with one voice, one heart and one spirit. We are the people of God. Let our worship today bring glory to God.

Prayer of Adoration

Holy God, we meet you in this hour to encounter our Creator, Sustainer and Redeemer, for the love of Christ urges us on. We meet you to be renewed in faith, to trust that which we cannot see and often do not understand, because the love of Christ urges us on. We worship you in order to be immersed in mystery, to be reminded that you are at work in our lives and in our world, that you are sovereign and good, because the love of Christ urges us on. We gather as your people to share together the fellowship of your Spirit, to bear one another's burdens and celebrate one another's joys, because the love of Christ urges us on. We thank you for that love and welcome you here. Amen.

Communion Sunday

Sermon by Reverend Walt Johnson

"Faith & Windows of Time"

Prayer of Preparation

Wondrous and unwearied God, breathe deeply into us so that we may be eased into this holy time.  We come breathless to you, from fretful times and blurred places -- our attention splintered, our energy drained, our love glazed, our faith frayed.  Still we have been drawn here, and we thank you for this insistent yearning to worship and renew.  O Breath of God, fill us with life anew.  Amen.

Call to Worship

One: God, whose Spirit has cut across our lines of race and class, age and gender, to create one new people, we, your people, have gathered for worship.

All: Open our ears and eyes and hearts to the presence of your Spirit among us, that we might have the courage and vision to be the church, gathered for worship; that we might believe that what can happen in this hour might be life-changing, life giving.

One: We are more than a group of people gathered for a meeting; we are the body of Christ, daring to worship.

All: By your Spirit, O Lord, remind us of who we are, lest we forget.

Prayer of Confession

O Holy Spirit, who moves subtly and secretly in our midst, catch us off guard and illumine the rough edges and the hidden corners of our prideful and anxious lives. Release us from the illusion that we can have life all neatly boxed and wrapped. Release us from faulty notions and early-learned preconceptions of who you are and how you work in this world. Free us to experience your holy presence, wide-eyed and eager like a newborn child. Kindle in us new visions for faithful living, through Christ our Lord, in whom we find our rest and courage. Amen.

Sermon by Reverend Kathryn Pyke

"You Just Have To Get Into the Darn Boat!"

Prayer of Preparation

God, we come with distracted hearts and busy minds. We are not fully present. Take away our anxiety, our fear and our doubts. Help us to lay them at your feet so that we may focus solely on you. You deserve our worship; so let nothing keep us from giving you all that we have today. This day is about you and for you. Guide us as we worship now.

Call to Worship

We gather for worship in this sacred space, away from the noise and busyness and demands of our every day. Open your heart to receive the peace of the Lord and let your soul be still. With gratitude for this place of refuge and peace, lift up your voice to sing God's praise.

Prayer of Invocation

Mighty God, who speaks a word of peace to calm our troubled sea; caring God, who nudges us away from fear and toward faith; ever-present God, who fills us with awe but also raises many questions without easy answers; open our eyes to see you in our boat—today, strengthen our hearts for the challenges that lie ahead, open our ears this hour to hear the word you speak. This we pray, In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Come, bring your pain.  Draw close to Christ.  Reach out to touch Jesus.  Find healing and peace in his love.  Amen.

All: Come among us, Healing God, with that love which never ends.

One: With faith reaching out to touch, with hearts straining to trust, we hope:

All: Come among us, Friend of the broken, with your compassion which makes us whole.

One: With word and wonder, with silence and song, we wait:

All: Come among us, Dryer of our tears, to lift us to our feet to follow you.

"Sent Out"

Prayer of Preparation

Loving God, we gather here as your holy people, hungry for your word, longing for your presence. Breathe your amazing Spirit into our lives and heal our hurts and pains. Restore us with strength and courage. Empower us to be your witnesses of peace in all the world. Amen.

Call to Worship

One: Take off your shoes!

All: We are standing on holy ground.

One: Shake off the dust!

All: We are ready to start afresh.

One: Let us worship God and receive Christ’s teachings, that we may be renewed and strengthened to share God’s love with the world.

Prayer of Confession

One: Holy God,

All: upon us, within us, among us.

One: For our apathy in the presence of oppression,

All: Forgive us.

One: If we have contributed to the broken heartedness of anyone,

All: Forgive us.

One: For our participation in systems that enslave,

All: Forgive us.

One: When we are deaf to your good news,

One: When our mouths remain too tightly closed,

All: Loosen our lips with songs of praise.

One: Hear our prayer, O God, and forgive our sins.

All: Hold us in your mercy, now and forever. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith

from the Brief Statement of Faith PCUSA

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life.

The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church.

The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles, rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism,

feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.

In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
