If
you are, or would like to learn more
about the Presbyterian Church and your own faith, you are invited to join us!
Please ask the pastor how (650) 589-3711. Every
Thursday, Pastor Don will be available to lead new member classes. Each Thursday
of the month will be a different topic: 1st Thurs – Jesus; 2nd
Thurs. – the Bible; 3rd Thurs. – the history of the Christian church;
4th Thurs. – the local church. If you are interested, please contact Pastor Don
no later than the Sunday before, so he can set the time with you.
Communion Servers
Needed
Recently, the Worship committee decided to encourage more people to help lead
the congregation on Sunday mornings by enlisting them as Lay Readers. There is a
sign-up sheet in the narthex that is filled through the rest of the Sundays for
2008 - that is a very good thing, and many thanks to those of you who have
signed up! Because this has been such a successful method, the Worship committee
decided to try a similar system for finding communion servers. If you are
interested in helping to serve communion on the first Sunday of any month,
please sign-up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex (next to the
Lay Reader sign-up). The only requirement for being a server is that you have
been an ordained elder or deacon with the church (as per the Book of Order).
Thanks in advance for your willingness to serve!
New
Hearing Assistance Devices
The church has purchased three new hearing assistance devices, for a total
of 7. If you would like to use one during worship, please see an usher.
Coffee Hour News
Many of us at Bethany appreciate the coffee time following services each Sunday.
The chance to check in with each other, celebrate the special events in peoples'
lives, strengthen friendships, and offer encouragement and support are essential
to our community life and an outgrowth of the worship experience. Deacons would
like to thank the folks who have been so faithful in helping with coffee hours
and we would like to encourage more participation and assistance.
The sign-up for Coffee Hours is usually posted in the hall. Deacons started
signing up to host once a month starting in August - how about you? We will be
providing an updated guide-to-the-kitchen, in case this is new for anyone. And
of course, if you have a question, ask your Deacon.
Prayers of the People
If you have a prayer that you would like to have printed in the Order of Service
bulletin insert, you may write your prayer on a prayer request slip and place it
in the offering plate. You may also call your prayer in to the office voicemail
(650) 589-3711,
and if you wish, it will be added to the prayer list.
Prayer Chain
The head of the chain is Rina Ranahan. If you have a prayer request, please
call Rina at (650) 872-0881 or (650) 291-6979 (cell). Her e-mail address is
Rinahan221@yahoo.com. If you do
not reach Rina, leave a message and call Milly Angeles at (650) 871-4520.
Large Print Bulletins
Available!
A few large print bulletins will be available from the ushers every Sunday. We
are trying out different formats and would love your feedback - let us know what
works and what doesn't! And if we run out of large print bulletins, let us know
that too, so we can print more. Thanks!
Adult Bible
Study at Bethany
You can see all the opportunities available to you for good study: the Monday
afternoon group, the Ruth Circle, the Marthas and the Pastor's Tuesday night
Class. Each one has a different emphasis.
The Pastor's class resumed September 29 with the first of 24 sessions on the
book, What Jesus Meant by Dr. Garry Wills, noted scholar and biblical
interpreter. 10 people have already joined the class for the 2009-2010 season.
More books can be ordered if you wish to join the study ($10 donation). The
study will take you into understanding Jesus in new ways. Dr. Wills translates
the New Testament passages himself and his translation breathes new life into
its substance. I hope you can come along and explore this study with us. -- Don
Bethany Book Club
Bethany Book Club will be meeting at Rina Ranahan's house, August
24th, at 7 p.m. Her address is 1357 Park Ave., San Bruno and her phone for
directions or questions is 650-291-6979. Our book for discussion is Andrew
Sean Greer's The Story of a Marriage (a shortish book whose setting
is San Francisco!). Please come!
Ruth
Covenant Group Gets Organized!
Yes, it's true! We met last Monday and set our schedule for the year! We will
meet every 2nd Monday of the month, and will be studying "Jubilee!
Luke’s Gospel for the Poor" - this year's Horizons study. The study will
begin at our next meeting on Oct. 12th - we meet at 7 pm, and usually
end by 9:00 or 9:30. The study will begin no later than 7:30, and after the
study time, we'll have time for some check in and prayers. The Ruth Covenant
Group is a women's study group, and all women of Bethany are warmly invited to
join us! (Our study books have been ordered, but haven't arrived yet. If you'd
like to join us and want to get a book before our next meeting, please contact
the church office and we'll be sure you get one!)

Sunday Themes
Worship announcement - Our denomination calendar identifies each Sunday with
scripture according to a Common Lectionary, a designation of the Sunday Seasons
in the Church Year, and a theme for many Sundays. The themes are included with
the list of services each month put on the website and in The Banner. Beginning
in September, I have sought to include information about each theme during the
service on that Sunday.
In September, we invited a seminary student to speak for Seminary Sunday.
In November, the second Sunday's is Care Giving, so a Care Giver will be
sought to speak about his or her work.
October 11 had the theme of HIV-AIDS Awareness. I missed arranging
someone for that Sunday because of my involvement in The Move. So the
session has authorized a visit for a presentation on the theme in November. The
format for each presentation will be a short introduction of the person and
topic during the announcement time in the service and then an invitation for
folks to come back from getting coffee, sit again in chairs and hear a longer
presentation after the service.
The purpose of this new feature is to add information on important aspects of
our community life for the congregation’s education. I hope you will take
advantage of the opportunities that come along. Look in the Banner each month
for the themes scheduled for the next month. -- Pastor Don

Collections for
Catholic Worker Hospitality House
Until the end of 2008, the Deacons will be collecting non-perishable items to
benefit the Catholic Worker Hospitality House at St. Bruno's in San Bruno. Our
donations will be used by the guests of the homeless shelter and to assist needy
families in the San Bruno area. Please place your donations at the base of the
Communion table. A dedication of all items will be made in the next few weeks,
and we will continue collecting items until the end of this year. If you have
any questions, please contact Roxane Wales at 650-303-2070.
The following is a list of suggested items:
| Canned fruit, vegetables, chili, tuna. | Socks | Peanut butter |
| Applesauce | Jam | Oatmeal |
| Sugar, salt, pepper | Pasta | Zip-lock bags |
| Regular ground coffee | Pasta sauce | Men's underwear |
| Tea bags | Toilet paper |
Calling All Knitters
A request from Committee on Preparation for Ministry: The church received
the following in an email from the Presbytery: “In the past year, we have
developed a series of rituals for our inquirers, candidates and finalists. These
rituals affirm their calling and symbolize the church's response to them. For
our candidates, we present them with a knitted stole/scarf - acknowledging the
important step forward and the servanthood to which they are being called and
prepared.
If you or others in your church could knit a few and deliver them to the
Presbytery office or a Presbytery meeting, we would be so grateful. The stoles
can be knit with any pattern (one stitch wonder or as complex as you would
like), any solid color or variation on a solid color, but we prefer liturgical
colors (purple, white, green, red, or deep blue) and varied lengths for short
and tall folks. (Somewhere around 4 feet long and 4 inches wide on average, but
variations are fine.) Don't tie off the cast on thread, as this symbolizes the
work of our calling is never complete and don't worry if your knitting is not
perfect - none of God's ministers are!
If you have any questions, please call Rev. Gail Doering, CPM Vice-Moderator, at
925-783-4726.”
Pastor Don is on the Committee on Preparation for Ministry, and has offered to
deliver the stoles for anyone who would like to knit one.
Open Mic Night at Bethany
Have you noticed? We have talented musicians at Bethany! Not just one or two,
but dozens! God has blessed us richly, indeed. And what are we taught to do with
our gifts? Hide them away? No! Scripture teaches us to share them, and discover
ways to multiply our talents!
To that end, and following the whispers and nudges of the Holy Spirit, your
Worship Committee is planning a series of open microphone evenings at Bethany.
We hope that this will draw even more talented and creative musicians, writers
and artists to us.
"Open Mic Night" is typically a situation where anyone who has a talent to share
can sign up to perform for a given amount of time - a 'set'. It is kind of like
our Thanksgiving Talent Show, but we will have just four or five sets, ten to
fifteen minutes each, in a concert setting.
Here's the exciting part: this FREE event is open to the public! In addition to
featuring our own Bethany artists, we will ask people from local churches,
colleges and the greater community to join us here to celebrate all of the music
and creativity that the Spirit brings to Bethany.
In addition to the music, we must have refreshments! We will serve coffee and
snacks, and will be looking to the congregation to help out with this end of the
project. (After all, the way to a musician's heart might be through the stomach!
We'll have these celebrations on the third Saturday of each month, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. We'll be looking for people to help
spread the word to local churches, colleges and the greater community, providers
and servers for coffee and snacks, a set-up and tear-down crew, and of course,
performers! Look for sign up sheets (or a friendly tap on the shoulder) to
appear soon. If you already feel inspired to help with this project, please
contact Pastor Don or Kathryn Quickert!
Watch your bulletin and Wednesdays at Bethany for updates about "Third Saturdays
at Bethany", and please keep this project in your prayers!
New
Picture Directory
New Picture Directory: Every Sunday, we'll be asking people to get their picture
taken! The Board of Deacons, with help from Kathryn Quickert, is going to update
our Bethany directory by providing an informal snapshot and
address/phone/e-mails/cell #s to our members. It may take a couple months, but
we are looking forward to improving our communication with everyone. Parish
lists will be updated as well after we complete this project. If you have any
questions, please contact Pam Matthews, (650) 944-8225, or email to
fpmatthews@aol.com.
Martha Circle Update
The Martha Circle made $430 at their boutique and candy sale this year!
Combining those funds with their pledges, they made the following donations:
The Marthas thank everyone who participated in the boutique and candy sale!
Peninsula Humane Society
Request
The Peninsula Humane Society is in great need of large blankets or sheets for
their shelter kennels. The shelter takes in many animals during the summer, and
lies to provide a blanket or sheet for each animal. If you have any old blankets
or sheets you are willing to donate, please put them in the box in the narthex,
and we will deliver them to the shelter for you!
Pennies for Glenda Hope
Every Sunday, there are tall bottles on the coffee table just waiting to
collect your pennies! The Martha Circle counts the pennies, and then makes a
donation to Glenda Hope's Network Ministries in the Tenderloin district of San
Francisco. Look through your loose change and take the opportunity to get rid of
some heavy coins while contributing to a wonderful ministry!
Volunteer
Opportunities
For those who are interested, there is a binder on the table in the narthex with
volunteer mission opportunities.
Rides Needed
Are you able to provide rides to church? Betty Hart and Donna Hagan
are now both living at the GreenHills Retirement Center in Millbrae. They would
love to come to church, but need rides. We are looking for people willing to
drive them to and from church on Sunday mornings, as well as for the Monday
study group and once a month for the Martha Circle meetings. If you can help,
please contact the pastor (650) 589-3711.
Hospitality House Needs
The Catholic Worker Hospitality House is running low on some of these basic
supplies. If you can help, they are in need of:
Items can be delivered to 672 Second Avenue in San Bruno, or you can place
them in the basket in the narthex labeled "St. Bruno's Hospitality House".
Thank you!

Sundays, we are adopting a new procedure. With the new system, there will be a
list of willing childcare providers posted in the usher cabinet, and if
childcare is requested, the head usher will
locate one of the providers and ask him/her to do childcare that morning. If you
are willing to be on the list, please contact Susan May (650) 871-6572 or the church
office.
